Family Tree

I'm just going to summarize what I wrote in my daybook because it is very hard to read.  I pretty much said that this poem is telling us about the little significances of where he's from.  He describes how his family is unique, and that played a big role in who he is.  I also said how I liked the use of his last metaphor saying how a leaf was falling from the family tree when he was born.
I can really relate to him and his story.  Families are huge influences and mentors to young children and to even teenagers.  I myself still look up to my older brothers for important advice to ask if I should switch my major, to very stupid advice like fashion...kinda... but the point is, no matter who you are around, they will impact your life in some way.
This author, George Ella Lyon, also writes about how he's from the "know-it-alls and the pass-it-ons, from the Perk up! and Pipe down!"  Every family has their own nicknames, or special relatives that has that one weirdness to them, but everyone loves.  We all have our own saying, and all of these different characteristics is what makes us all different and unique. And this brings me to my favorite part about him being his own leaf falling from the family tree.  Everyone is different, they bring their own personality and spark to the table, they're their own leaf, but all together we make a tree that no one else can resemble.

  1. I completely agree with you idea of family in the people around mold you into the person that you are. I find it interesting that once you get older you can appreciate the little things like weird nicknames that we may have hated growing up.

  2. Nikki, Thanks for pointing to your "golden lines" from the poem. I can see your perspective on the reading from your discussion here.

  3. Family is very important, even though today's is more like Modern Family, but hey it's there. I am from New York and my entire family is too. It's funny how southern people make fun of us "yankees" and vice-versa, but I try to keep my mouth shut.

  4. Hey Nikki! I completely agree with what you wrote about this poem. I too also look up for advice from my family, especially from my dad. They have an air of respect and compassion that you wouldn't get from anyone else. No matter what happens, you know that they got your back.

  6. Hey Nikki,
I really liked your post it made me look back on how my writing was influenced. I also agree with your statement " I myself still look up to my older brothers for important advice to ask if I should switch my major, to very stupid advice like fashion...kinda... but the point is, no matter who you are around, they will impact your life in some way.". I learned that friends may leave but the family cleaves..

  7. I don't think that you could have said this any better! Families play a huge role in people's lives and I think that that is one of the most important things in life, family. Like you, I have two older sisters and I look up to both of them for all sorts of things. I think that it was very important to have those bonds with your family. Most people think that I am so weird because my family is extremely close. I actually like to go home on the weekends and just hang out with my parents. It seems like you have a great family and that's so awesome that you have that relationship with them. It's kind of cool how everybody's family and home lives are different.

  8. Hey Nikki,
I liked that metaphor too. Every person can be viewed as a leaf leaving hometree after it matures. I have an older sister and I always ask her about stuff. It's good to have those connections. I couldn't picture what my life would be without them.

  9. I also chose to do one of my blogs on this. Family is one of the most important things to me and i think this peice of writing captured that. In my blog I talked about my ancestors and where they were from. I talked about the significance of family and how huge mine is.I relly enjoyed writing about this.
